Strata - Julian Davis

Image of Julian DaviesAs part of  Strata’s support for Little Hiccups as its Charity of the Year I decided to take on a number of different challenges in support of Linsay, all the helpers at Little Hiccups and the children and families that they help.  I’ve only done a couple of events like this before (the longest was only 12km) but my year is now filled with bigger challenges.  Some of the events still look a bit daunting to me but at least I have started the training.  It would be fantastic if you would support me in these events by donating to Little Hiccups.

12th March 2016 - The Mighty Deerstalker, Scotland’s Original Obstacle Race

Somewhere near the Scottish Borders is the venue for what the organisers claim is the hardest off-road-head-torch-wearing run that exists. Apparently I will be sent across rivers, through forests and over a mountain or 2 in the pitch dark of a chilly March night.  The distance for this event isn’t disclosed anywhere on the organiser’s website.

20th March 2016  - Major Series at Bramham Park

Having already signed up to do the 10km version of this Obstacle Race, Nigel Robson (one of our Land Directors) invited me to join the Strata Team for the 5km version of the event.  Rather than doing it once I am now doing the 10km race on my own followed by the 5km version as part of the Strata team – hopefully with a rest in between.

 30th April 2016 - Yorkshire Warrior, Harrogate

The organiser’s website sums up this event very well – “Setting off from The Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate this obstacle course has challenged teams and single warriors since it's first year in 2013. 30 Obstacles set in the mighty Yorkshire countryside....10 mile gruelling course...800m dark tunnel, extreme ice bath, huge scaffolding structures plus tonnes of mud and some pretty murky water. In 2016 we expect to see 5,000 Warriors take on the challenge!” and I’ll be one of them.

7th May 2016 - Rat Race Dirty Weekend, Burghley House
The World’s biggest obstacle course race covers 20 miles with 200 obstacles to struggle over, through and under.

28th May 2016 - Trailblazer Half Marathon, Clumber Park

A simple half marathon at Clumber Park along the forest trails with no obstacles in sight.

9th July 2016 - Man vs Lakes, Lake District

The organiser’s website sums this one up perfectly -“This 26.2 miles is like nothing you will have experienced. You will enter the Lake District by striking out with an audacious and surreal crossing of the quick sands of Morecambe Bay, before plunging north through mountainous country on a rollercoaster running route that brings you to the foot of England’s most famous Lake. A shore-to-shore crossing of Windermere at its narrowest point will set the stage for what is yet to come: Proceeding higher into the hills and forests of the area and immersing yourself into the Lake itself, tackling short wades, swims, slides, jumps and an amazingly bold floating assault course. A trademark Man Vs “Vertical Kilometre” will push those quads to breaking point and help to rack up a whopping 3000ft of ascent before you psych yourself up for a “Swallows and Amazons” rope swing suspended from a crane chucking you into the drink.”

 13th August 2016 - London Rat Race

I’ll need to swim, crawl, jump and slide my way around the wettest 10km obstacle race in the UK.  I’ll be one of few who tackle over 35 obstacles including our 50ft water slide, giant inflatables and the biggest water jump in any UK race. This is a totally unique challenge in London’s Docklands.

10th to 11th September 2016 - Scotland Coast to Coast - Nairn to Glencoe

105 beautiful miles by foot, bike and boat plus 10,840 feet of accent.  One of the original adventure races returns to the wild hills of Scotland. I’ll be joining a few hundred other as we run, bike and kayak over 105 miles through the Scottish Highlands.
